1. What Smoke Signals are

1.1Smoke Signals are community-submitted tourism discoveries, experiences, viewpoints, routes, cultural places, creative spaces, nature locations and other points of interest reviewed by Route 420 before publication.

1.2Smoke Signals are not intended to be a mechanism for cannabis retail advertising, unlawful product promotion, delivery, sales referrals or disguised dealing.

1.3A published Smoke Signal is not a guarantee that a place is safe, lawful, open, accessible, Authenticated, government-approved, cannabis-friendly, licensed or suitable for any particular user.

2. Eligibility and account link

2.1Only users aged 18 or older may submit or manage a Smoke Signal.

2.2Submissions must be linked to a verified Route 420 account so that Route 420 can retain the identity/account relationship for moderation, complaints, prize administration where applicable and rights management.

2.3Email/account verification does not itself prove a person's legal identity or the legality of a location or business.

3. Meaningful description requirement

3.1A Smoke Signal must include a meaningful description of the discovery or experience. A photo and coordinate with no explanation is not sufficient.

3.2The submission form should technically require a description of at least 50 characters. Route 420 may increase the minimum where needed to improve content quality.

3.3The description should explain what is worth discovering, what a respectful visitor should know, and any access or safety context. Seed/admin content created to populate the platform may be labelled and handled separately from ordinary community submissions.

3.4Automated word filters may block certain terms, but passing an automated filter does not mean content is lawful or approved.

4. Responsible posting - general rules

  • Post only information that is accurate to the best of your knowledge and that you are authorised to share.
  • Do not post private homes, live personal locations, private cultivation/production sites, security-sensitive premises or exact locations that could expose a person or place to harm.
  • Do not trespass or imply that a map pin grants access. Respect landowner permission, protected-area rules, municipal rules and venue conditions.
  • Do not post another person's face, name, contact details, cannabis use, health information or other private information without an appropriate lawful basis and permission.
  • Do not identify children in cannabis-related or otherwise sensitive content.
  • Do not post defamatory allegations, competitor sabotage, fake reviews, harassment, hate speech, threats, obscene content, unlawful surveillance or confidential business information.
  • Do not post content that encourages dangerous conduct, intoxicated driving, fire hazards, environmental harm, poaching, theft or evasion of law enforcement.

5. Cannabis-specific posting rules

!
NO SALES OR PUBLIC-USE PROMOTION
Do not use Smoke Signals to offer, sell, supply, deliver or broker cannabis or THC products; publish cannabis menus/prices/discount codes; direct users to private sale channels; bundle cannabis into an experience price; or encourage public cannabis use. Route 420 may remove such content immediately.

5.1A Smoke Signal may discuss adult cannabis culture, lawful private experiences or a cannabis-adjacent destination in a factual, responsible manner, but it must not facilitate unlawful dealing or make unsupported claims that a venue is legally authorised to sell cannabis.

5.2Do not depict or encourage cannabis consumption in public, in the presence of children or in the presence of non-consenting adults.

5.3Do not promote consumption before or during driving, hiking, water activities, adventure activities, wildlife encounters or any situation where impairment could create material danger.

5.4Do not make unapproved medical, therapeutic, disease-treatment or medicine claims. Where content discusses wellness or health, Route 420 may require supporting evidence or remove the claim.

5.5A business may not use a community Smoke Signal as a disguised advertisement. Business promotions belong in the authorised listing/partner or media channel. Route 420 may allow approved partner businesses to submit experiential content, but the same no-unlawful-sales rule applies.

6. Nature, wildlife and sensitive locations

6.1Protecting South Africa's natural and cultural heritage takes priority over creating content. A map pin is not permission to enter land, fly a drone, make a fire, camp, collect plants, touch wildlife or conduct any activity requiring permission or a permit.

6.2Do not publish exact locations of threatened species, nests, breeding sites, rare plants, sacred or burial sites, archaeological locations, private community sites, refuges, water sources or other fragile places that could be harmed by increased access.

6.3Route 420 may make a location approximate, delay it, obscure directions or keep it private for safety, conservation or cultural reasons.

6.4Route 420 does not promote smoking or cannabis consumption in nature reserves, protected areas, wilderness areas, hiking trails, beaches, forests or other environmentally sensitive locations. No fire, ember, smoking material, litter or waste may be left in nature.

7. Rights in submitted content and social sharing

7.1You retain ownership of original content that you lawfully own.

7.2By submitting a Smoke Signal, you grant RSTT and Rolling Stoner (Pty) Ltd, and their authorised platform, publishing and media service providers, a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, reproduce, display, map, geocode, publish, distribute, crop, resize, format, excerpt and reasonably edit the content for Route 420 and Rolling Stoner community, editorial, tourism and promotional purposes.

7.3The licence expressly includes publication of approved Smoke Signals on the Route 420 website/app, Route 420 social-media channels, Rolling Stoner social-media channels, Rolling Stoner websites, newsletters, community updates and editorial compilations, provided the essential meaning is not knowingly distorted.

7.4Ordinary community submissions do not create a right to a fee, royalty, commission, prize or other compensation. Any paid creator arrangement must be agreed separately in writing.

7.5Route 420 may credit your display name, username or first name where practical, but attribution is not guaranteed in every social format. You should not use a public display name that reveals private information you do not want shared.

7.6You may request that Route 420 stop making new uses of a contribution. Where legally and technically practicable, Route 420 will stop future discretionary republication after a valid request, but already-published posts, backups, lawful archives, printed/editorial material and third-party reshares may remain.

8. Permissions and third-party rights

8.1You warrant that you own the submitted content or have permission to grant the licence above, including permission for identifiable people, private venues, logos and copyrighted material where required.

8.2If content contains another person's personal information, you must have a lawful basis for making it public. Do not submit screenshots, private messages, surveillance footage, private membership data or other confidential material without authority.

9. Moderation and rejection

9.1Route 420 reviews submissions before publication but does not guarantee that every submission is verified or accurate.

9.2Route 420 may reject, edit for format, blur, reduce location precision, delay, hide, annotate, suspend or remove content for any reasonable policy, safety, legal, privacy, IP, conservation, quality or brand reason.

9.3Common rejection grounds include no/insufficient description, irrelevant business advertising, unlawful sales promotion, private or sensitive location exposure, dangerous or illegal content, duplicate/spam submissions, misinformation, poor-quality or unauthorised media, rights complaints or content inconsistent with Route 420's community purpose.

9.4Moderation is not a legal certification. A failure to remove content immediately after a complaint does not mean Route 420 endorses it.

10. Reporting and takedown

10.1A person or business may report inaccurate, unsafe, unlawful, privacy-invasive, confidential, defamatory or rights-infringing content. The report should identify the content, explain the concern and provide supporting evidence where available.

10.2Route 420 may hide content while investigating and may contact the submitter, business, landowner, rights holder or authorities where reasonably necessary.

10.3Urgent child-safety, stalking, credible threat, intimate-image, private-address, severe privacy or endangered-species reports should use the urgent legal/takedown channel.

11. IMPORTANT - risk, liability and indemnity

!
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
Public map content can have real-world consequences. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Route 420 / Rolling Stoner are not liable for loss caused by a user's inaccurate content, third-party conduct, route conditions or a user's decision to visit a location, except where the law does not permit the limitation.
!
INDEMNITY
To the fullest extent permitted by law, you indemnify the Route 420 / Rolling Stoner parties against third-party claims and reasonable legal costs to the extent caused by your unauthorised content, breach of privacy/IP/confidentiality, defamation, unlawful sales promotion, trespass, environmental damage or other breach.
